Council on Commish Appointments: Out with the Old

Belmont City Council sent a message to city commissioners Tuesday night--longevity is no guarantee of reappointment.

Belmont City Council chose to appoint three new Parks and Recreation commissioners Tuesday night, passing over two long-time incumbents for the three open seats. Judi King and Mike Davis, who have served on the commission on and off for over 20 years each, did not receive enough votes from the five-member city council to be reappointed for another two-year term. The three open seats were filled by newcomers Tim Wong, Richard Sullivan and Thaddeus Block. Each will serve a two-year term. Two youth Parks and Recreation commissioners, Alex Bartee and Pantea Zakeri were reappointed. Each will serve a one-year term. Actually, Mr. Warden and Mr. Lieberman have the same view on Council health benefits - at least based on what they have each communicated. They both have said the Council health benefit should be removed, as is the trend in many communties as towns try to solve the future impacts of pension and healthcare costs. City Seeking to Fill Commission Seats

There are openings on all city commissions--Planning, Parks and Recreation (adult and youth), and Finance; the application deadline is Jan. 27.

  For those whose New Year's resolutions call for becoming more involved in the community, the City of Belmont has just the answer. The city is currently recruiting residents to serve on its three city commissions: To apply for any of these positions, fill out the application form available at www.belmont.gov, or pick up an application in person at the city clerk’s office (One Twin Pines Lane, Suite 375), and return it to the city clerk no later than 5:00 PM on Friday, Jan. 27, 2011. Applicants must live in Belmont. Except for a small stipend paid to planning commissioners, there is no compensation for these positions.
