The chapel also lends itself to the use of the university, which holds its musical productions and other major events there, including the commencement mass at the end of the school year. The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur originated in France in 1804 and came to Cincinnati in 1840 to open the first Notre Dame school in the United States. They went also to Oregon before arriving in Northern California, to open another school in 1851. The College of Notre Dame was moved from its original California location in San Jose to the Ralston Mansion in Belmont in 1923. Notre Dame High School was developed on the property a few years later.
