CSU Salaries: What's A Few Hundred Thousand, Anyway?

Senator Leland Yee's office is concerned about large discrepancies found in officials' income figures as reported by different sources.

  The press release was delivered to us Thursday about mid-afternoon with a bold headline: "University officials refuse to answer inquiries, say it’s unnecessary to respond to public scrutiny" The release came from Adam Keigwin, Chief of Staff in the office of Senator Leland Yee. It made for some pretty interesting reading. According to Keigwin: "Records show officials from the California State University system are failing to fully disclose the compensation of several of their top executives." The Chief of Staff suggests "there are major compensation discrepancies when comparing IRS filings (Form 990) to records at the State Controller’s office and what CSU discloses on their website or in public records requests. Judge Says Cheating Student Cannot Return to Class

The Sequoia High School student's father sued the school district over the punishment.

  When Jack Berghouse's sophomore son was expelled from an honors English class at Sequoia High School for copying a homework assignment in March, Berghouse sued the Sequoia Union High School District claiming his son's due process rights were violated. But according to the San Jose Mercury News, San Mateo Superior Court Judge George Miram ruled Thursday that Berghouse's son would not be allowed to re-enroll in the honors class for the rest of the semester while the case is litigated. Miram wrote that Jack Berghouse had failed to establish the likelihood that he would prevail on the merits of the case at trial. The judge rejected the lawsuit's argument that the expulsion would adversely affect the teenager's chances for success. "There is …

District Flips 'On' Switch for Friday Night Lights

Carlmont High School's football field will get its lights; installation will begin this summer.

  After months of discussion, negotiation and community outreach, the Sequoia Union High School District (SUHSD) Board of Trustees has approved a project that will allow Carlmont High School to extend its athletic field use into the evening hours. The Usher Field Football Lights Project was approved by a unanimous vote by the board Wednesday night according to board president Alan Sarver. Carlmont was the only school in the district that did not have lights on its athletic field. On Tuesday, the district, led by superintendent, Dr. James Lianides, made a summary presentation of the Mitigated Negative Declaration for the project. State Superintendent Urges Parents to Vaccinate Students

Parents of students entering seventh grade must vaccinate their children to protect them against whooping cough as required by California law.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson this week is urging parents of students entering the seventh grade to vaccinate their children to protect them against whooping cough as required by California law. “I call on all parents to act as soon as possible and ensure their children receive this important vaccination,” Torlakson said in a statement. “Taking a few minutes now will help protect your child’s health, and help them get off to a smooth start in the next school year,” he said. According to Dr. Ron Chapman, Director of the California Department of Public Health, in 2010, 9,000 Californians were diagnosed with pertussis and 10 infants died from the disease. “Due to the collective statewide vaccination efforts this …

Notre Dame High Students Earn Awards in Essay Contest

Junior Ellie Hurley was awarded the grand prize in the Respect Life Essay Contest

  For the third straight year, a student from Notre Dame High School, Belmont, has been honored as the grand prize winner in an essay contest sponsored by the Archdiocese of San Francisco. Last week Notre Dame principal Rita Gleason announced the school's four winners of the Annual Respect Life Essay Contest. Junior Ellie Hurley was awarded the grand prize. Ellie was joined by Sophomore Kaylee Kohlmaier as First Prize Winner in San Mateo County and Freshmen Simone Conde and Nicole Bryant who earned Honorable Mention Citations. Students participated in the May 13 Liturgy and Awards Ceremony at St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco.  Auxiliary Bishop William Justice celebrated the Liturgy and presented the awards to students in Grades K-12 …

Poll: Should the City Okay the Crystal Springs Uplands Project?

The new middle school would serve approximately 240 students. Tuition at the school is $33,000 per year.

  Crystal Springs Uplands School would like to build a new middle school on Davis Drive in Belmont. The Belmont Planning Commission will discuss the proposal at tonight's meeting. The proposal for Davis Drive calls for a middle school (grades 6-8) for up to 246 students. The campus would include three structures on approximately seven acres: a main academic center; a cafe; and a gymnasium. A turfed soccer field is also included in the first phase of the project. Belmont Planning Commission to Consider Crystal Springs Uplands Proposal Tonight

The private Hillsborough school wants to build a new middle school on seven acres of property on Davis Drive in Belmont.

  The Belmont Planning Commission will discuss the zoning and envrionmental aspects Tuesday night of a proposal by Crystal Springs Uplands School (CSUS) to relocate its middle school campus to Davis Drive. The Mitigated Negative Declaration is the document by which the city reviews the aesthetic and environmental impact of the project with regards to grading, construction and occupancy. The document is in accordance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). The proposal calls for a 52,000 square-foot campus facing the canyon on what is currently occupied by 84,000 square feet of office and warehouse space. Pianos for a Song

Yamaha pianos are for sale at NDNU at discounted prices.

  The public is invited to take part in the sale of Yamaha and digital pianos this week at Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU). The pianos are on loan to the Department of Music and Vocal Arts through a special loan program with the Yamaha Piano Corporation, and the university is making them available for purchase at institutional discounts. The sale will include baby grands, grands, professional uprights, digital pianos, and used name-brand pianos, including Yamaha, Bosendorfer, restored Steinway and more. CSM Roundup: Uikilifi Qualifies for State Meet in Four Events; Baseball, Softball Teams win Super Regional Openers

CSM is hosting track and field, baseball and softball playoffs this weekend.

Nikki Uikilifi qualified for the California Community College Athletic Association track and field finals in all four women’s throws for College of San Mateo at Friday’s Northern California championship and qualifying meet at CSM. CSM’s men’s team will also be represented in all of the throwing events at next weekend’s championships at Cerritos College in Norwalk. Roman Skovronski had the top track effort for the Bulldogs. The freshman improved his No. 2 all-time CSM ranking in the 400 meter hurdles a half second to 53.31, placing a close second to Chad Thomas of College of the Siskiyous (53.21).
