Please come to the San Mateo City Council meeting tonight at 7:00 or shortly after and voice yourRead More concern about replacing our community's skating rink with a retail store. Bring something to read/do while we wait for our turn to speak. City of San Mateo 330 West 20th Avenue San Mateo, CA 94403 dina.artzt@comcast.net if you are interested in updates on our cause.

The City has spent time working with the developer, behind closed doors it would seem, yet inputRead More from the public was an afterthought due to MANY families showing up at a May 6 City Council Meeting (not on the Agenda, yet rink to close June 1 !) So many kids spoke so sincerely and eloquently how the closure would hurt them and their friends. Does San Mateo City Hall care about the residents of our community? Especially the children. City Hall has the upper hand (the Master Plan agreement), we expect them to step up. Why has City Hall allowed SPI to make the children of our community suffer so much agony and pain over this process? Shame on City Hall for letting this drag out !!
CP May 13, 2013 at 02:30 am
Don't give up....the kids are worth it! It is wrong for SPI to be in non-compliance with the masterRead More plan. City Hall should be filing some type of injunction to stop closure of the ice center....this is not right. Repeat of what happened with 7 Eleven on North San Mateo Drive when the developer ignored our City ordinances/plans. Why is this happening again in our City of San Mateo?

I went to the grand opening Saturday, and it was a great time. A fun environment to meet and greetRead More with other dog lovers. Looking forward to their classes and events.

I've shopped at Pet Food Express locations for years and find that they fill a unique element of theRead More pet supply and service market. The associates are extremely well-trained to consult on any number of pet and pet-owner concerns/problems/needs. They carry a wide variety of food products that have met special needs of my pets with finicky tastes, skin allergies, digestive issues, etc. Associates are eager to spend whatever time is needed to answer all of my questions and address all of my specific requirements. The low-cost clinics have been a blessing for keeping my pets current on vaccinations at a reasonable cost. I have philosophically supported their mobile adoption events. At one of the events, I found myself falling in love with a precious "new" 4-year-old pup named "Baby," who has been a beautiful addition to our pet menagerie. I love the dog wash for our big Labrador...especially after a day at Ft. Funston!! The pets love visiting the store and browsing the bins for treats. The associates are always eager to treat the pups with little tastes of products that PFE carries. It is a wonderful store with great staff and I love the buy-3-get-the-4th-one-free offer on most items. Great addition to Belmont. Rounds out, without duplicating, offerings of boutique stores like "Dolly's" (also in Belmont....also love to shop there for unique items that no one else carries.). Welcome PFE!!

I am with you, Margaret. My family has shopped at Dolly's Treasures for years and have beenRead More completely happy and satisfied. I cannot imagine shopping anywhere else. Pet Food Express is a fine organization and I wish them only the best, but the Belmont location is just not appropriate or justified. There are more "big box" pet food stores within a stones throw of Belmont than I care to recount, but Dolly's successfully competed. But a block away? Belmont government has no conscience. They make no attempt to protect long-term small businesses. There are other types of businesses that could occupy that building, even, yes, another bank. But Belmont just does not care. I have lived in this town for 33 years and during that time have never had an occasion to feel good about our government. They only make one type of decision: inappropriate and wrong.
Margaret r freydoz April 2, 2013 at 08:07 pm
We already have a wonderful FAMILY run pet store 1 block away. Dolly’s Treasures has been inRead More Belmont for a few years and has always been wonderful to deal with. I am sad a chain store has been allowed to open 1 block away from a truly independently run business. We always talk about supporting the independent business but allow this to happen.

I doubt Target will leave Bridgepointe. It's far enough away that both will serve two differentRead More areas of San Mateo. I believe Target replaces Sears, the theater replaces the current food court and Cost Plus. The new food court will be on the landing.
Steve Hayes March 29, 2013 at 12:09 am
Based on the picture, it is obvious that Target will be in the Sears space - does Sears go away? ToRead More carry that forward I assume Target leaves Mariners Island along with the ice skating rink?

Willy makes a great margarita at Whispers Cafe in Belmont (on El Camino in the same shopping centerRead More as Mountain Mike's Pizza and Dream Dinners).
Aspen Moulden May 4, 2013 at 11:51 am
Locally, Ceviche makes a good margarita. Better than Holas for sure. If you are willing to drive,Read More the family owned La Fiesta, la Fiesta del mar, and Vive sol restaurants in mtn view have great margaritas. Have them made with fresh lime-- the best!

First thing I saw was the sign. I take my car to that shop. They always take great care of ourRead More cars... and they do find creative ways to advertise :) I unknowingly drove through this and it took some time to get through that block but seemed like the fire firefighters were not to concerned, they were standing 20 feet away from the hole in the ground!
Anonymous April 25, 2013 at 03:28 pm
I also can't help but notice how the Japanese Auto Repair sign is featured so prominently in theRead More photo that was taken. Nothing like a little free advertising!

To clarify some incorrect information from a bystander who was there. Industrial Road was neverRead More closed completely. One lane in each direction was closed to allow for PG&E Vehicles to work, however the road was never completely closed.

Nobody said anything about telling "job creators" (lol) where to put their money. And weRead More shouldn't have to. Americans should care about other Americans. They take money out of our system and build up another country's middle class, they're bad people and bad Americans. Your "I've got mine" attitude really sucks, Jo Tog. I hate people who want something for nothing, but the selfishness and disregard for your fellow citizens that you exhibit is equally annoying. Are you from another country or did your parents just not teach you how to be an American?
Andrew Peceimer March 24, 2013 at 10:51 pm
What we need is more Obama money for job creation like Solyndra...LOL

This is a puzzling article. How do we reconcile it with the 3/22/13 Mercury news headline "BayRead More Area and California job markets are far stronger than first thought"?(http://www.mercurynews.com/business/ci_22849139/bay-area-and-california-job-markets-are-far) The answer is: the Merc is talking about year-over-year changes in employment and unemployment. 2012 was bad in an historical sense but is an improvement over 2011 nonetheless. This Patch article refers to the unemployment rate in the months of December and January. An increase in unemployment is normal when the Holidays are over. A better comparison may be January 2013 vs. January 2012. From the California EDD (see http://www.calmis.ca.gov/htmlfile/msa/sf.htm) report for San Francisco-San Mateo-Redwood City, the unemployment rates at various points in time were: January 2012 7.3% December 2012 6.0% January 2013 6.3% We can argue about whether the President has made the situation better or worse, but the statistics do indicate that the economy is improving.

What a wonderful little store to shop at! The prices are great and the clerks are so friendly.
Guy Wyers March 13, 2013 at 12:54 pm
Interesting study. I made a similar observation while working on the email overload problem fromRead More another angle. We have built Tagwolf, an intelligent email assistant that largely automates filing email in folders. Some of our users report that it is “like having an assistant that deals with the inbox” and expressed a significant decrease in the stress related to email.

If the goal is to eliminate leakage into and out of the sewer system, the plan is going to be anRead More agonizingly slow process to achieve that goal. At 250 or so houses sold per year, how long before each and every building is checked for and if appropriate, repaired of any sewer leaks? 40 years? I bet we could get much better adoption rates than 250 year if we mandated testing but not mandated repair. Many people, if informed will do the right thing. People don't know to do something with sewer laterals simply because they don't know that they have an issue. People who want to do the right thing or people who simply want to be proactive will take care of their own known issues if they know there is a problem. Anytime we introduce the notion of POS mandates, we make the building department the most powerful people in our community. I for one am just not okay with that.
Drew & Christine Morgan February 16, 2013 at 07:54 pm
In conclusion--As REALTORS, we’re used to handling city issues in the form of disclosures suchRead More as the new smoking ordinance, school boundary issue, or even dog and alarm licensing requirements so this newest burden which the city apparently feels we are fighting just for the sake of having to do less work, is really a non sequester for us. What this will burden is the home sale transaction—the seller and the buyer—to find a way to appease the city’s new requirement without unwittingly defrauding the lender at the same time.
Drew & Christine Morgan February 16, 2013 at 07:54 pm
Part VI--Of course the city will have its hand out for encroachment permits, building permits and soRead More forth and they’ve offered no proposed relief on these fees in order for homeowners to comply. Or, the third option presented on Thursday, was that the buyer of the property could sign a pledge to repair the sewer later at their expense with 180 days of closing—and deliver a deposit as security of performance—an amount which has yet to be determined. Of course this will raise all sorts of red flags for lenders, who if they get wind this requirement exists, will force the repair of the sewer lateral prior to the close of escrow as part of a lending requirement. So while we applaud the city staff for attempting a workaround, their third prong option still has some kinks in it. Namely that once the seller and buyer negotiate who will pay for this repair those negotiations will become part of the contract—the very contract the lender will scrutinize and thus require a sewer lateral certification before they will lend on the property.

Joan, Great story, keep up the good work.

I am worried about the impact on parking - it is already congested with starbucks and panda.

From the looks of it, it's still a few weeks (or month) away from opening. It was supposed to beRead More ready by the end of 2012....should do a good biz based on the crowd at the RWC location that Belmont Dad is referring to (of course that's right next to the movie theater!)
Belmont Dad January 16, 2013 at 05:31 pm
Best hamburger ever!!! I can't wait, I go to the RWC one quite a bit.
