Elsie Goss didn't seem to mind the noise as she sat in her easy chair and watched out the sliding glass door as a team of volunteers from the Junior League and George P. Johnson tore down an old roof and hauled re-landscaped the backyard of her San Carlos home.

"This patio has seen better days," said 82-year-old Goss as pieces of metal roofing were shorn off the old patio and fell to the ground.

Goss, who suffers from arthritis and recently had open heart surgery said that a representative from Rebuilding Together (RBT) called and asked her if she'd like some work done at her house.

"I said of course they could come. In addition to the 40-year old patio, I had four-foot weeds in the backyard that I just couldn't tolerate and it was getting too depressing," said Goss.

On Saturday volunteers from schools, community service groups, corporate America and neighborhood associations from Daly City to Palo Alto--nearly 3000 in all--came out to help renovate and rehabilitate 67 buildings for neighbors in need as part of Rebuilding Together's National Rebuilding Day. Each project location was sponsored by a local business or agency.

In addition to homes, Rebuilding Together volunteers made repairs and renovations on schools, churches and community facilities.

In Burlingame, CORA (Community Overcoming Relationship Abuse),a facility used as a shelter for victims of domestic violence received fresh coat of paint and various repairs. In Palo Alto, the building on Cambridge Avenue got a fresh coat of paint. And in East Palo Alto, more than 100 volunteers arrived at the San Francisco 49er Academy middle school to install carpeting, furniture, light fixtures and bookshelves.

The 49er Academy project was sponsored by the International Facility Management Association Silicon Valley Chapter (IFMA-SV), who were instrumental in obtaining donations of everything from carpet to backpack hooks.

"We are facility managers, so we know everybody from professional painters and carpet layers to construction crews," said Bob Kraiss, a member of IFMA and the day's construction captain.

San Mateo resident Terry McDowell was out helping the volunteers crew replace windows and doors on the N. El Dorado Avenue home she shares with her mother.

"I am very pleased," said McDowell. "They worked very hard and even put in a new garage door." PG&E was the sponsor of McDowell's project, and most of the volunteers were PG&E employees.

RTP is the local affiliate to the national Rebuilding Together network, which completes over 10,000 repair projects across the United States each year. For more information, go to www.rebuildingtogetherpeninsula.org

Great job RBT!. Also, a good step could be removing junk cars from driveways.
Joan S. Dentler (Editor) April 29, 2012 at 12:41 pm
And Penny....if you have any photos or videos from St. Andrew's please feel free to upload them here!

I love hearing about projects like this. I'd like it even better if it were publicized in advance, so even more people could volunteer. It's great fun to join neighbors in a community effort. I had a blast helping with the KABOOM project to redo the playground at Mezes Park a couple of years ago.

Do these repairs require building permits? What about new decks? Or is it just politically OK ! Nug Nug, wink wink, look the other way?
Joan S. Dentler (Editor) April 29, 2012 at 03:14 pm
Buck....I believe the projects done are not the type that require permits----they are primarily renovation instead of rebuilding, i.e. painting, carpeting, landscaping. I suggest going to Rebuilding Together's website www.rebuildingtogetherpeninsula.org for more info.

Buck - Having coordinated many of these NRD projects, whether or not a permit is required depends on the scope of the repairs being performed. Typically, if a permit is needed, the same application process occurs. I will say that each town in which I have performed these jobs bends over backwards to assist in the process and typically comes to inspect during their off times so that the jobs can be completed in a timely fashion.

I cannot thank our amazing volunteers enough! They are the heart and soul of what we do. By sharing their time, talent and energy, they have made the homes of 135 San Mateo and Santa Clara County residents safer and healthier. Additionally, 21 well-loved community facilities got a much-needed facelift. Rebuilding Together Peninsula truly reflects the spirit of the old-fashioned barn raising. It is neighbor helping neighbor. Thank you to everyone who made National Rebuilding Day possible. Seana – Executive Director

Hi Susan,
National Rebuilding Day takes place on the last Saturday of April every year. All of these projects are known well in advance, as they take many months to plan. The best way to get involved is to get your company or organization to sponsor a project. If that's not possible, then check with any of the regional offices in your area. They might be able to place you with a group that needs more volunteers. Rebuilding also does other projects throughout the year so maybe you can find one that works for you.

If something requires a permit, then the Construction Captain makes those arrangements with the local city and finds skilled labor appropriate for the work being done.

Just a short thought to get the word out quickly about anything in your neighborhood.
Share something with your neighbors. Write a new post... What's up? Make an announcement, speak your mind, or sell something

First thing I would ask is who did you talk you, and have you followed up? Was this something youRead More got in writing? Did they give you a timeline that has lapsed?
Steve Hayes June 19, 2013 at 12:54 pm
The practical solution - just paint it yourself. Sounds like a very small job and the City alreadyRead More agreed it is a good idea.
George Metropulos June 19, 2013 at 12:59 pm
Do you really think the city is waiting for someone to get killed?
Michele Moyer June 16, 2013 at 09:17 am
Thanks Joan - there is one in the sub-head of the blog I posted on School-Force Voices today; wouldRead More love if it could be corrected. Been scratching my head til I saw this post :)
Joan S. Dentler (Editor) June 16, 2013 at 11:20 am
Sorry about that! There's nothing I can do on my end----it's system-wide bug, which I believe isRead More fixed now. :)

I also preferred the 'old' Patch - this format makes it difficult to find articles that are aren'tRead More that old. One example was the informative article on who was running for city Council. I was having problems finding it and finally had to query on a candidate's name to find. I don't recall having that issue with the original format. Also our neighborhood had a water break line and we were without water for some hours a few Sundays ago. I tried to find out the reason for the break (because of construction or old pipes?) and could not find anything on the Patch regarding this. Not sure if they just didn't report or I just couldn't find.

Not crazy about the new Patch either. Also, I want to post-for sale, and this section is crowdedRead More with announcements, etc.
Pearl June 14, 2013 at 04:15 pm
Another thing that needs to be fixed: When you go to leave a comment, it takes you over to whereRead More you have to sign in, you sign in expecting to be returned to the article on which you are commenting, but it, instead, takes you back to some different article. PLEASE FIX THIS!!!! Also, please reinstate the feature where we can sign up to be notified if/when more comments are made concerning the article(s) we've commented on so we can follow the conversation. Thank you.

Thanks Sam! You should also post this Half Moon Bay (halfmoonbay.patch.com) and Pacifica PatchRead More (pacifica.patch.com)! I'm sure our readers would appreciate the great tip!

Strongly suggest Patch readers check all the YELP reviews of this business. Very uneven experiencesRead More reported.

what do the local Belmont restaurants think of this? do these people pay a license to the city?
Joan S. Dentler (Editor) June 4, 2013 at 07:15 am
Hi Don....thanks for your question. Yes, Off the Grid does pay a licensing fee to the city, and soRead More far, we haven't heard any concerns by local restaurants. The food trucks provide an option to a traditional restaurant---pick up and go----and they are only around 4-5 hours per week (on Mondays, typically not a big restaurant night anyway). Have you tried the food yet?
