Foreign Language Fair Opens Opportunities for Children

The third annual Kids' Foreign Language Fair, held at the Redwood Shores Library, was host to parents looking to raise their kids in a multilingual environment.

The event was organized by Yvonne Chan, owner of the in Belmont, which offers courses on arts, crafts and other skills at its studio.

Chan stressed the importance of learning languages early on in life to have the best chances of becoming a fluent speaker.

“I put on this event so the community will be able to have access to the resources they need”, said Chan.

Chan herself came to the United States from Hong Kong and became interested in language instruction when she was trying to teach her children to speak Mandarin Chinese.

She stressed that many people are not multilingual not because of lack of interest but rather a lack of opportunity to do so. Now that resources are available, Chan stressed the need for American parents to make foreign language instruction a priority financially by purchasing books and tapes as well as enrolling in courses.
