This 11-Year-Old Peninsula Girl Just Made Golf History
Li, a resident of Redwood Shores, won the 2014 U.S. Women's Open sectional qualifier at the Half Moon Bay Golf Links on Monday and also became the youngest player ever to qualify for the U.S. Women's Open Championship.

On a day when no other golfer even came close to making par, 11-year-old Peninsula resident Lucy Li "blew away the field" on Monday, becoming the youngest player ever to qualify for the U.S. Women's Open Championship, a tournament official said Tuesday.
Li, a resident of Redwood Shores, won the 2014 U.S. Women's Open sectional qualifier at the Half Moon Bay Golf Links on Monday, finishing at even-par over two rounds and beating the second-place finisher by an impressive seven strokes.
A spokesman for Half Moon Bay Golf Links said Li is a member of the course's Legends Club and plays three or four times a week at the coastside course.
"This is a special achievement and we wish her the best," said Ryan Farb, assistant director of rules and competition for the Northern California Golf Association.
Li shot rounds of 74 and 68 on the par-71 Half Moon Bay Golf Links' Old Course.
Farb noted that like Li, the second- and third-place qualifiers, Kathleen Scavo and Paige Lee, are products of the Junior Tour of Northern California. Scavo and Lee shot seven-over and eight-over, respectively.
The top three finishers advanced to the U.S. Women's Open Championship, which will be played at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina in June.
