After guiding Menlo School to its second straight Central Coast Section Division III baseball championship this spring, Craig Schoof was named the ESPN Rise/Cal-Hi Sports State Baseball Coach of the Year in the small schools division.

Schoof’s Knights finished the year 26-5, winning a share of the West Bay Athletic League title for the second year in a row, and became the first San Mateo County team to win consecutive CCS titles since Serra in 1993-94. Menlo also topped Serra, among others, in .

“This was a special group of guys, nothing seemed to faze them and they always played the game the right way,” said Schoof, who has won five section championships at Menlo.

Menlo became the first team to win in Division III since Carmel in 2006-07, and the first in any division since 2008. Schoof also led the Knights to consecutive CCS crowns in 1988-89, as well as a section championship in 2004.

In Schoof’s 24 years at Menlo, spanning two stints, the Knights have won 15 league titles. He is entering his 32nd year as a history teacher and 12th as athletic director.

Schoof became the first CCS coach since 2005 to be named the state’s small schools coach of the year.
