All Aboard! Take Caltrain to Levi's Stadium

A joint ticket will allow you to transfer seamlessly to VTA light rail which runs straight to the stadium.

Three preseason events at Levi's Stadium will give sports fans a chance to try out Caltrain service before the 49ers kick off their inaugural season at the new venue Sept. 14.

Aug. 2, the San Jose Earthquakes meet Seattle Sounders FC in one of Major League Soccer’s most heated rivalries. For the schedule of service to the Aug. 2 Earthquakes game at Levi’s Stadium check out the Special Events section on caltrain.com.

On Aug. 17, the San Francisco 49ers will host the Denver Broncos in the first NFL preseason game ever to be played at the new stadium. And, on Aug. 24, the San Francisco 49ers take on the San Diego Chargers in preseason action.

The best way for fans from the Peninsula to get to the stadium on public transit is to hop aboard Caltrain to its Mountain View station. From there, fans will transfer to VTA light rail for the trip to the stadium.

Caltrain also will add extra trains to meet the anticipated demand.

Prior to the Aug. 2 soccer game, Caltrain will operate two additional southbound trains that will depart San Francisco at 4:35 p.m. and 4:55 p.m., making all local stops to Mountain View.

For Sunday afternoon 49ers games, Caltrain will operate two additional southbound trains that depart San Francisco at 9:35 a.m. and 9:55 a.m., and make all local stops to Mountain View.

Special service train schedules will be adjusted to reflect later kickoff times.

Details are also available by visiting Caltrain’s blog Peninsula Moves.

Post-game service
After the soccer match and 49ers games, the two special trains will take passengers back up the Peninsula to San Francisco. The first train will leave 45 minutes after the game or when full and the second special service train will depart approximately 25 minutes later.  Regularly scheduled northbound and southbound trains will also serve the Mountain View station on game days.

Easy Ticket Purchasing

Caltrain is making it easy for customers to get a ticket for both rail systems by selling a joint Caltrain/VTA Day Pass through its station ticket machines. The Day Pass will be good on Caltrain through the end of the service day and until 3 a.m. on VTA. Fans paying with a Clipper card are reminded to tag on and off Caltrain then tag on VTA.

The new joint ticket will be available beginning July 26, but like all Caltrain day passes, must be purchased the day of travel to be valid.  Caltrain is a proof-of-payment system, and tickets must be purchased before boarding the train.  Those without a valid ticket, including Clipper tag, are subject to a citation and fine.  Caltrain reminds fans to drink responsibly and to remember that alcohol is not allowed on game-day trains beginning at 9 p.m.  VTA doesn’t allow food or beverages on its light rail vehicles and buses.  For fare and schedule information, visit www.caltrain.com or call 1.800.660.4287 (TTY 650.508.6448.)
