VIDEO: Parents Camp Out to Enroll Kids at Cipriani

Superintendent Emerita Orta-Camilleri said this is at least the second year parents spent the night outside the school on the night before registration.

Dozens of parents braved the cold weather the night of March 6 and early the next morning to try to ensure a spot for their kindergartener at .

Superintendent Emertia Orta-Camilleri said as of Wednesday afternoon, there were 71 students signed up for the 2011-2012 kindergarten class at Cipriani.

Even though the school is projecting about 75 students in the kindergarten class for the next school year, not everyone on the list is guaranteed a spot, Orta-Camilleri said.

Kindergarteners with older siblings already at Cipriani, for instance, would have priority over those at the end of the list, she said.

On the other hand, though, some families on the list may move away before the school year starts, or decide to enroll their kindergartener in a private school, which would free up more spots, Orta-Camilleri said.

There are 61 kindergarten students in this year's class. All elementary schools in the district provide a 25 to 1 student to teacher ratio for kindergarten classes, Orta-Camilleri said.
