State Comes Through for Belmont Schools

Both the public elementary and high school districts will receive millions from the state for construction projects.

With growing enrollment and limited real estate to expand, school campuses in Belmont and Redwood Shores can at least plan on rebuilding on existing campuses thanks to a $5.6 million disbursement from the California State Allocation Board.

According to the San Mateo Daily Journal, the Belmont-Redwood Shores School District (six elementary and one middle school) and the Sequoia Union High School District (Carlmont High School), will receive $3 million and $2.6 million respectively for construction projects.

“Our schools are community centerpieces and play a key role in preparing young people for the future,” State Superintendent Tom Torlakson wrote in a Wednesday press release announcing the distribution of funds.

“Local districts now have additional resources to bring to bear on constructing and rebuilding schools, which in turn creates jobs and improves our students’ chances for success," Torlakson added.

A total of $519 million was disbursed toward 230 school construction and modernization projects in 92 school districts, county offices of education and charter schools throughout California, the Daily Journal reports.

SUHSD Superintendent Jim Lianides said, “The $3 million will be used toward our next project to meet our future enrollment growth.”

Current construction projects on BRSSD campuses are funded through Measure I, a $25 million bond measure approved by district voters in 2010.

Interim Co-Superintendent Nellie Hungerford told the Daily Journal the money came at a wonderful time.
