SLIDESHOW: Let the Merriment Begin

Under a crescent moon, the lighting of the Belmont Christmas Tree in the Carlmont Shopping Center kicked off the holiday season.

Carolers from six schools, crafts people selling their wares, Santa visiting with children, and thousands of colored lights upon one giant tree transformed an otherwise ordinary Monday night into a festive occasion at the Carlmont Shopping Center.

The annual Christmas tree lighting, sponsored by Carlmont merchants, was a family affair, bringing kids of all ages and their parents to the center on a moonlit night wedged somewhere between homework and bedtime.

Event organizer Lenore Griffin has lost track of how many years Carlmont's been lighting up the season. "I think it's been 43 or 44 years," said Griffin of Carlmont Cleaner and Tailor.
