Skyline College Grad a Star in the Classroom

Her 4.0 GPA is the best statistic of her career.

Kelly Huey made a lot of points for the Skyline College women's basketball team the previous two years and is continuing that trend at Concordia College (Portland, Ore.) this year.

A two-time all-Coast Conference selection with the Trojans, Huey saved her best work for the classroom.

Huey was named the 2012 California Community College Athletic Association Female Scholar Athlete of the Year it was learned Thursday and will be presented the award at a luncheon at the Marriott Hotel in San Mateo on March 27.

The award represents the highest individual honor within the CCCAA, which selected Huey out of the more than 27,000 student athletes in its association.

Huey is not only the first Skyline College student athlete but also the first San Mateo County Community College District student to earn this honor since it started in 1984.

“We are very excited for Kelly to receive this honor,”  Concordia coach Aaron Christian told the school's website. “There are very few that even have a chance to be considered for an award like this.”

Huey earned the honor after playing the first two seasons of her collegiate career at Skyline College in the San Francisco Bay Area. Huey accumulated a 4.0 GPA at Skyline while pursuing a degree in nursing.

Huey has continued her pursuit of a nursing degree in the nursing program at Concordia where she has also excelled on the CU women's basketball team.

“Kelly has been an awesome addition to our school and basketball program,” said Christian. “Besides her contributions on the court, she is an outstanding person and student. She balances a busy schedule from carrying a 4.0 GPA throughout college and majoring in nursing all while being a student athlete, which speaks volumes about the person she is.”

On the basketball court, Huey's all-around game has been a nice addition for the Cavs. She averages 11.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.75 steals per game. Huey has scored 10 or more points in 12 of the Cavs' last 14 games.

Huey's average of 4.5 assists per game also rank her third in the CCC, 16th in NAIA Division II and would rank as the eighth-best single-season average in school history if the season ended today.

Huey will receive the CCCAA Female Scholar Athlete Award as part of the 2013 CCCAA Celebration of Student Athletes Luncheon.
