Robotics Team Heads to Missouri for Championship

The robotics FIRST Team 100, The WildHats, advanced to the championship round and will travel to St. Louis, Missouri, this upcoming week.

The team competed in the Sacramento regional in Davis and the Silicon Valley Regional in San Jose.

When most school classrooms empty out when the last bell rings, rooms G-2 and G-6 on the Woodside High School Campus go into overtime. Students from Woodside arrive first, followed by teens coming from Carlmont and Sequoia High Schools.

They pull on their safety glasses and head into the shop where they mill parts, tiny shavings of aluminum falling away from critical pieces of our robot’s frame. Others open laptops, critiquing the latest iterations of robot design or calculating just how fast a scaled-down basketball needs to travel to sink into competition baskets. Students build electronics boards, create digital animations and improve our team website at www.team100.org.

The FIRST competition stands for “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.” This program provides a fascinating  real-world engineering experience for the students and helps them discover the value of education and careers in science, technology, and math. Students have the opportunity to learn first-hand about mechanics, electronics, fabrication, programming, animation, web-site design, and more, as part of this club.
