'Our Town'....Truly a Production of OUR Town

From the actors and production crew to local historic photos and sound design, every facet of NDNU's production of "Our Town" is a reflection of Belmont.

First produced in 1938, the Pulitzer-Prize winning  is an American stage classic. Thornton Wilder's most renowned play about small-town U.S.A. is one of the most frequently performed plays in the twentieth century--and Friday night it will open in Belmont at NDNU Theatre.

Yes, Grover's Corners, the fictional town in Wilder's play, will take on a decidedly Belmont look and feel with a local cast of characters and some special scenic props that will spark a bit of nostalgia in audience members.

Presented by the Department of Theatre, "Our Town" will run April 13-14 and April 20-21 at 7:30 p.m. and April 22 at 2:00 p.m.

The play is directed by NDNU faculty member, Bruce Williams, and will feature Central Elementary School teacher in the role of Stage Manager, who will narrate the tale of love, marriage, death and daily life in Grover's Corners, New Hampshire. (Paul Newman played that role in the most recent Broadway revival of the show--but Metropulos is sure to put his own spin on this local production.)

In addition to Metropulos, the NDNU production features thirteen undergraduate student actors who are joined by seven visiting artists including, Jeff Young, Larry Rico and Mary Hill.

On the use of local scenery in the play, director Williams explained, "In our production we use projections as part of the scenic element.  These images were supplied by , Vice President/Curator of the Belmont Historical Society and are of Belmont, California, a-not-so fictitious early twentieth century American town where milk was delivered every morning, wood had to be chopped, everyone knew everyone else’s business, people were born, grew up, got married or not, died, and all the time that this was happening teenagers received a maximum weekly allowance of just 25 cents."

, chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance encourages audience members of all ages to attend the play, and has announced specially priced tickets for Belmont residents.

"'Our Town' is a production that can be enjoyed and appreciated by all ages.  NDNU Theatre and Dance encourages families to attend this uplifting and heartwarming production.  In that spirit, Belmont residents are being offered a special admission price of $1.00 in celebration of '100 years 'Our Town' is your town… Belmont!'
