NDNU Recognized Nationally for Community Service Programs

For the second year in a row (NDNU) has been named to an elite group of colleges and universities who make significant contributions to the welfare of their surrounding communities through community engagement and service-learning programs.

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) admitted NDNU to the 2012 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for reflecting the values of exemplary community service and achieving meaningful outcomes in its community.

“The principles of social justice and community engagement are integral to the NDNU experience; they are part of our institutional DNA,” said NDNU President Judith Maxwell Greig, Ph.D.

“The three programs that have been recognized by the Honor Roll are just a few of the many programs that involve both day and evening students in undergraduate and graduate programs in direct community service.”

The Corporation for National and Community Service, which has administered the Honor Roll since 2006, admitted a total of 642 colleges and universities for their impact on issues from literacy and neighborhood revitalization to supporting at-risk youth. NDNU was recognized for three of its many community service programs:

• Call to Action Day, an annual university-wide day of service in which classes are canceled to allow participation in various service activities around San Mateo County
• First-Year Experience (Human Experience: Borders and Thresholds), in which first-year students put on a carnival for approximately 150 children of migrant farm laborers temporarily housed in the Camphora/Jimenez labor camps of Soledad, CA
• “The Gift – A Christmas Carol,” the longest running musical version of Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” in the Bay Area, which for over 25 years has been presented free to the community and has collected well over 48 tons of food and more than 20,000 toys.
