Hide the Car Keys: Wednesday is 'Walk/Bike to School Day'
The annual event will get kids out of their cars and onto the streets for a leg-stretching, lung-filling, heart-pumping walk or roll to school.
These days, walking/biking/boarding to school has become something of a rarity—between busy schedules, traffic-clogged roadways, heavy backpacks and worried parents, kids usually jump in the car for a ride to school.
But on Wed., Oct. 3, San Mateo County families, teachers and communities will join people from around the country to walk, skateboard and bike to school in celebration of Walk/Bike to School Day 2012.
Across the U.S., more than 3,000 schools plan to participate in the event. Locally, elementary and middle schools in San Mateo County plan to participate, including schools in Belmont and San Carlos.
