A view of San Francisco’s famed Chinatown from a Chinese perspective is offered by by Dr. Yong Chen at Filoli on May 18.  Between 1850 and 1943 this was the largest community of Chinese immigrants in the United States. Its location in the heart of San Francisco made it an integral part of the unique cultural fabric of the city. Dr. Yong Chen explores how these new Americans formed such a vibrant and lasting community as they synthesized the values of their new land with their ancient traditions By examining Chinese-language source material of this period, Dr. Chen reveals the complexity of Chinese San Francisco from a different perspective. Book signing and sale included.

Yong Chen was born in China and received his Ph.D. degree from Cornell University. He is an Associate Professor of History and Asian American Studies at the University of California, Irvine, where he also served as the University’s Associate Dean of Graduate Studies from fall 1999 through summer 2004. He is the author of Chinese San Francisco 1950-1943: A Transpacific Community (Stanford, 2000), a cultural history of the largest community of Chinese Americans in the United States during that crucial period. His research on diverse topics such as Chinese American history, U.S. ethnic food and higher education has been published in various leading academic journals. He is also a regular contributor to an editorial column in World Journal, the largest Chinese newspaper in the United States and a frequent guest on ETTV, discussing issues pertaining to China, the United States and Taiwan.
