Carlmont Ranked as One of U.S. Top High Schools by Newsweek

Four schools in the Sequoia Union High School District made the list.


Carlmont High School was ranked No. 620 on Newsweek magazine's list of the top high schools in the U.S. for 2013.

Bay Area schools fared well on this list of 2,000 schools, with six in the top 114, including Monte Vista High in Cupertino (No. 103) and Mission San Jose in Fremont (No. 114). Pacific Collegiate School in Santa Cruz ranked 101st.

In the Sequoia Union High School District, Carlmont was joined by Summit Prep (ranked No. 677), Sequoia (ranked No. 714) and Woodside high schools (ranked No. 1057). 

Newsweek's list highlights schools in the nation that turns out college-ready grads. The formula is based on graduation rate, college acceptance rate, AP tests, SAT scores and other similar factors.

Carlmont High School boasts a graduation rate of 94 percent; 96 percent of its students are college-bound; and it scored an impressive average of 1653 on the SAT and 24.5 on the ACT. 

According to the Newsweek articleSummit Preparatory Charter High School has a graduation rate of 88 percent, 99 percent of students are college bound, and students scored an average of 1527 on the SAT and 21 on the ACT. 

Sequoia High School's graduation rate is 92 percent; 97 percent of its students are college-bound, with an average of 1,587 on the SAT, and 22.9 on the ACT.

Woodside's graduation rate is 90 percent, with 97 percent of its students headed for college with an average SAT score of 1,565 and 23 on the ACT.
