Belmont Schools Supe May be Heading to Stockton

Emerita Orta-Camilleri is said to be a finalist to be Stockton Unified School District's (SUSD) new superintendent according to Recordnet.com.

The 58-year-old school administrator has been the superintendent of the Belmont-Redwood Shores School District (BRSSD) since 2006. In November, 2011, the district's board of trustees voted 3-2 not to renew Orta-Camilleri's contract. She will leave the district in June.

Several Stockton Unified trustees are expected to visit BRSSD this week to do some additional research on Orta-Camilleri, who is said to have emerged as the finalist from a field of five candidates.

The Stockton Unified School District is considerably larger in both enrollment and budget than Belmont-Redwood Shores. SUSD has 38,000 K-12 students at 64 schools, whereas BRSSD is a K-8 district with 3,200 students on seven campuses.

The budget for BRSSD is roughly one-tenth that of Stockton-Unified.

According to the California Department of Education, Belmont-Redwood Shores' enrollment is 10.4 percent Latino, 2.3 percent black, 23.7 percent Asian and 55.1 percent white. Stockton Unified is 58.7 percent Latino, 12.2 percent black, 10.5 percent Asian and 8.9 percent white.
