Reminder: Smoke Testing Continues This Week in Area 13

The smoke you may see coming out of your sewer system is actually a test being conducted by the City of Belmont's Public Works Department. See below for your neighborhood's smoke testing schedule.

Through Sept. 13, crews from the Belmont Public Works Department will be conducting smoke testing of the city's sanitary sewer system.

According to public works officials, smoke testing identifies locations where there are possible defects or improper connections in the sewer system.

This year crews will be testing four areas throughout the city. To view the locations to be tested see PDF map to the right, or click here.

The testing consists of forcing harmless smoke into the sewer lines in the neighborhood.

According to the City Manager's Weekly Report, one resident has already seen the benefits of smoke testing:

Recently a resident on Yosemite took the time to call in regarding the great work by the crew doing smoke testing on her property “They found an area on her property that had a missing cap and she did not even know a line existed in that area. The crew was extremely conscientious, helpful and wonderful men and should be recognized for their good work.”

The smoke is manufactured for this purpose and leaves no residuals or stains and has no effect on people, pets, food, and material items. Public works officials say homeowners do not need to be home and inspection crews will not need to enter homes. Faucets and bathroom facilities may be used during smoke testing.

Note: If anyone in the home has respiratory problems or is immobile, notify Public Works prior to testing so that they may provide assistance.

The Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for the smoke testing product is available upon request. Call the Belmont Public Works Department at 650-595-7400 or go to www.belmont.gov.

Prior to the start of testing, residents will receive a yellow door hanger notice.
