Principal for a Day: Do You Think They'll Give Longer Recess?

Three schools in the Belmont-Redwood Shores School District will have VIPs sitting behind the principal's desk Thursday.

 

What would YOU do if you could be a school principal for the day? Give a 'no homework' pass, or perhaps allow everyone to bring their dog to school?

On Thursday, March 22, local community leaders will find out what it's like to be a school principal when they serve as Principal for a Day at public schools throughout San Mateo County.

In the Belmont-Redwood Shores School District (BRSSD), Central, Nesbit and Sandpiper elementary schools will participate in the day-long program.

  • Anne Campbell, San Mateo County Superintendent of Schools San Mateo County Office of Education will spend the day as Central Elementary School's principal. 
  • Michelle Sioson Hyman, Initiative Officer, School Readiness Silicon Valley Community Foundation, will spend the day at Nesbit Elementary School.
  • Rachel Del Monte, Branch Manager Peninsula Family YMCA will be the principal for the day at Sandpiper Elementary School. 

The annual Principal for a Day program, sponsored by the San Mateo County Office of Education, gives local leaders the opportunity to walk in the shoes of a school principal, learn about the challenges principals face and strengthen community ties with local schools.

Other participants in the 2012 Principal for a Day program are: Lieutenant Ed Barberini, Office of San Mateo County Sheriff and Homeland Security; Rod Hsiao, San Mateo County Board of Education; Sepi Richardson,City of Brisbane, Mayor; Marge Colapietro, City of Millbrae, Mayor; Len Stone, City of Pacifica, Mayor Pro Tem; Jorge Jaramillo, San Mateo County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, President; Sheryl Young, Community Gatepath, CEO; Dr. Daniel Ullyot, Peninsula Health Care, Board Chair; Stephanie Sassman, Genentech, Senior Manager; Lisa Macias, City of Brisbane, Chief of Police; Andre Levin, Branch Manager, Wells Fargo Bank; and others.

Guest principals will have the opportunity to meet with the principal, other school staff, parents and students.  In addition, they will tour school facilities and observe classes.
