San Mateo County residents with disabilities were treated to a resource fair with a variety of activities in Redwood City today.
The Disabilities Awareness Fair featured resource tables from more than 50 agencies that serve the local disabled community.
"Many people simply don't know about the resources available to them," said Craig McCulloh, the county's Community Program Specialist and organizer of the fair. "They tend to be very isolated."
The San Mateo County Commission on Disabilities estimates that about 140,000 people in San Mateo County have some type of disability.
“This event really brings out awareness, but there is always an opportunity for more education,” said Susy Castoria, the VP of the county’s Commission on Disabilities.
Diane Smith, a member of the Commission on Disabilities, added that the county was still a “work in progress” on making the county more handicapped accessible.
The fair at County Center Plaza from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. featured a wheelchair obstacle course, service dog demonstrations, and disability-related sports like wheelchair basketball.
The Foster City Lions Club also served a barbecue lunch for purchase.
