Local Students to Join State Capitol Protest
In protest of Gov. Brown's proposed Cal Grant cut, a group of students from Notre Dame de Namur University will travel to Sacramento on Wednesday to take part in a rally.
A group of 14 students from (NDNU) will join over 200 students in Sacramento Wednesday to protest Governor Jerry Brown’s proposal to nearly halve the Cal Grant maximum award to students at California’s independent nonprofit colleges.
The first ever rally is part of the AICCU (Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities) Day in the Capitol and includes a morning briefing with legislative members advocating support of Cal Grant funding and testimony by a number of students before the Assembly Budget #2 Subcommittee on Education Finance.

Notre Dame de Namur University students will meet with legislators to share their own Cal Grant stories and to ask for support to maintain the current maximum award amount.
The rally will be held at 11:30 a.m. on the West Steps of the State Capitol. Legislative and community leaders scheduled to speak include Speaker of the Assembly John Perez (invited); Assemblymember Susan Bonilla (District 11 – Concord); Assemblymember Marty Block (District 78 – San Diego); Diana Fuentes-Michel, Executive Director of the California Student Aid Commission; Mary Lyons, president of the University of San Diego and chair of AICCU board; and Roger Salazar, Sacramento communications consultant, University of Redlands alum and Trustee.

Students from Notre Dame de Namur University attending the rally are freshmen Monica Carrillo, Lucila Chavez, Giovanni Douresseau, and Ashley Mandel; sophomores Larissa Bertos, Andrea Huerta, Evelyn Lomeli, Misael Romero, Stefano Tabios and Arnaldo Vivanco; juniors Oumou Ly and Cinthya Vieyra; and seniors Joshua Petitt and Daissy Tabares.
