Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho, It's Off to Trail Work They Go!

Belmont residents began clearing trails at Water Dog Lake Park on Saturday, but more volunteers are needed.

Three people showed up to help with the trail work at Water Dog Lake Park on Saturday, said Kevin Sullivan, the city's Parks and Recreation Commissioner.

Sullivan says though the turnout was smaller than he'd hoped, the group “got a big dig done and had a good time.”

Mike Davis, Dick Wong and Sullivan faced newly grown poison oak and other vegetation on the trail when they arrived on Saturday morning. The "corridor" had been cleared away last year but fresh plants have grown over it since then, Sullivan says.

The men worked on steep, rocky terrain to clear away about 30 yards of what will be a 4-foot-wide trail.

“We were able to use some of that rock to build up the 'outside edge,' which is the downhill side,” Sullivan says. “It was a ton of work for three.”

The group will look over the area the next time they return to the trail to add on any finishing touches needed. Additional volunteers are requested.
