California will be well-represented today for the start of the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, which climaxes with a speech by Michelle Obama.
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa, Chair of the 2012 Democratic National Convention Committee, will take part in the “gaveling in” of the permanent chair shortly before 6 p.m. Eastern time. Rep. Barbara Lee is scheduled to speak around 6 p.m. Eastern time, and Rep. Xavier Becerra, from Los Angeles County, is scheduled to speak shortly before 9 p.m. Eastern Time.
The first lady will take the podium at 10 p.m. Eastern Time. Music fans may want to take note that Ledisi, a former Cal student, will be singing sometime between Michelle Obama’s speech and the Jimmy Carter video.
