County Board of Supervisors Candidate: Dave Pine

We asked candidates running for San Mateo County Board of Supervisors four questions to help residents choose. Part three of a six-part series.

Among the six, Dave Pine is running as the environmentalist candidate, and he lists “environmental stewardship” among his platform goals. He is a board member of the San Mateo Union High School District, where he helped implement the district’s three-megawatt solar project. For more on the candidate, visit www.davepine.com.

1) What would you prioritize if you got voted in?

The necessity of getting the San Mateo County fiscal house in order. Given the extent of the budget shortfall, we will need to find ways to deliver services more efficiently, and we will need to set priorities and make difficult cuts in the budget.

2) Who are your primary supporters?

I have quite a few, starting with Congresswoman Jackie Speier, Assembly member Rich Gordon, former Assembly member Gene Mullin, the Sierra Club, Don Horsely, a current supervisor and a former San Mateo County sheriff, Anne Campbell the county superintendent of schools, and Tom Huening the San Mateo County controller.

3) What issue do you feel most strongly about and what’s your position?

Besides the budget, we also need to do everything we can to strengthen the local economy and make sure that people have jobs and we preserve our tax base.

4) What’s one thing most constituents don’t know about you?

I grew up in New Hampshire, and I was elected to the New Hampshire state legislature when I was 19. It’s not as big a deal as it might sound because New Hampshire takes its democracy very seriously, and has 400 people in its state legislature.
