Assemblyman Jerry Hill to Visit Belmont Senior Center

Jerry Hill will pay a visit to Belmont to help educate seniors on telemarketing and investment fraud.

Assemblymember Jerry Hill will be on hand at the on July 18 to present the Seniors Against Investment Fraud program.

The program, operated under the California Department of Corporations, will begin at 10 a.m. and focus on the education of California residents over the age of 50 regarding telemarketing and investment fraud crimes, amongst other types of fraud.

“[Assemblymember Hill] comes and introduces the program and is available for questions,” said Belmont Recreation Coordinator Laura Guluzzy. “So many seniors are victims of telemarketing, investment, and all different types of fraud crimes. So this is a way of educating seniors how to avoid being in that situation.”

Hill, 64, was elected to the state assembly in 2008, and this will be the third occasion in which he has reached out to local seniors regarding avoiding attacks from scam artists.

“I’m not going to suggest that it’s age-related necessarily,” Guluzzy said. “I know people that are younger that have been victimized of telemarketing fraud crimes, but I’m just going to say that it’s [Assemblymember Hill’s] way of making seniors aware of it.”

Belmont is certainly an appropriate venue for Hill and SAIF to reach out to seniors, considering the population of elder citizens in Belmont is rising quicker than any other city in San Mateo County.

“The state of California has a very fast growing population of those 65 and older,” Guluzzy said. “San Mateo County has the most in that group. And in San Mateo County, Belmont is the fastest growing population of 65 and older.”

Spaces for the program can be reserved by calling the Twin Pines Senior and Community Center front desk at (650) 595-7444.
