Wrong-Way Driver Crashes Into Electrical Transformer in Belmont
The Redwood City woman was going the wrong way when she crashed into the transformer, according to Belmont police.
A woman who took a wrong turn Tuesday, ended up crashing into an electrical transformer in Belmont, police say.
According to Belmont Police Captain Patrick Halleran, the crash happened just before 1 p.m. near the intersection of Masonic Way and Granada Street.
"Upon arrival, emergency personnel found that a 2010 Mini Cooper, driven by a 46 year old Redwood City woman, had collided with a PG&E electrical transformer on the southeast corner of the intersection," Halleran said.
When the car collided with the transformer, it sparked a small fire, which was quickly put out by Belmont firefighters, according to the captain. The woman was not hurt.
"The driver had been eastbound on Masonic Way and began to turn south on Granada Street, when she realized she was going the wrong way on a one-way street," Halleran explained of the events leading up to the crash. "As she was trying to turn back onto eastbound Masonic Way, she accelerated and collided with the transformer."
The captain said that the solo-vehicle crash knocked out power to surrounding homes and businesses, but it wasn't immediately clear how many people were affected. PG&E crews were on scene to make necessary repairs.
As of 8 p.m., the utility company reported that only two customers were without power.
