The suspect, a man about 30 years old, entered the victim's car at about 9 p.m. near Toto's, located at 1250 El Camino Real, and demanded the keys to her car, Belmont police said.

The man then reportedly pushed the woman out of the car. She managed to grab her 5-year-old child from the back seat before the suspect drove away.

He was last seen driving east on Waltermire Street toward El Camino Real. Officers searched the area but weren't able to find him.

The man is black, about 5 feet 7 inches tall and around 180 pounds, according to police. He has short black hair and no facial hair, and was wearing a black windbreaker jacket and blue jeans.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call the Belmont Police Department at (650) 595-7400.

I heard a police officer say on TV that when that happens you should throw your keys as far as you can. The bad guy isn't going to stick around to look for them while you're running the other way.

The theory is that while he's looking for the keys, she takes the kid and goes into Toto's and calls 911. Or he realizes that the cops will be on the way soon and takes off in the other direction.

Just talked to the police, an update to this story should be coming soon.

Another criminal who pulled himself over on the side of the freeway, just like Andy Klein! Don't these guys know it's illegal to pull over on the shoulder of the freeway unless it's an emergency? Maybe that's why the cops pull over to investigate! Duh. Forest Gump said, "Stupid is as stupid does." He was obviously smarter than these modern criminals.

What does this comment have to do with this article?
pat bell May 19, 2011 at 05:39 AM
It certainly is NOT the victim's fault. She saved herself and her child; kudos to her. My comment was for others who might find themselves in the same situation. If you're in a position to throw the keys away, do so. Are you saying the perpetrator lived in low income housing? I hadn't heard that.

Maybe you're not interested in helping people to protect themselves, but others are. So if you think putting all criminals in affordable housing in Belmont is the solution, go for it. That still makes no sense to me, especially since this guy was from Rohnert Park, but if you want more criminals just blocks from the BPD, you can talk to the PD about your plan. I can't imagine they want to import more criminals, but you're welcome to pitch your idea to the city.

Where does it say that he was pulled over on the freeway? I must have missed another article. Pat, not that I care about San Carlos politics, but your vice-mayor was pulled over on Edgewood Road not the freeway. Either way he is stupid for drinking and driving, but we should atleast try to be correct in our criticism.

Hi Bill, here's the updated article: http://belmont-ca.patch.com/articles/man-arrested-for-carjacking-near-totos-pizzeria The Police Department said the vehicle was stopped by the side of Highway 101, with the suspect inside. Hope that helps. -Laura

Bill, I read that Andy pulled himself over on the Edgewood offramp, which makes sense because he lives up there at the top of Brittan. I've also been told that's why it was a CHP case. I agree with your assessment of the intelligence of his actions.

In one of the posts deleted by Laura, Mr. Yonts calls me a "retard." I hope thats why she pulled the posts because that is one of those hurtful words that some people use without realizing how awful it is. It should be on the list of words that automatically gets your post deleted.
