Windham Police Cruiser Involved in Accident With Van

The incident took place as an officer was responding to a call.

A Windham Police cruiser was involved in an accident while responding to a call on Sunday, according to Windham Police Capt. Mike Caron.

Caron said that Officer Terri Moore was responding to a call at around 11 a.m. when a van collided with the cruiser at the intersection of Route 111 and the Interstate 93 north exit ramp.

Caron added that the van had only one male occupant at the time of the accident.

The van was coming off the highway when the collision took place

Moore was transported to the hospital as a precaution. The driver of the van was unharmed.

Caron said that damage to both the van and cruiser was moderate to significant.

It is still undetermind what will be done with the police vehicle at this time.

This is the second time in 10 months that a WPD cruiser has been involved in an accident.

Serious damage to a police car took place in March 2012 after a Salem woman slammed into the vehicle driving a Mercedes R350.

The officer at that time was also crossing into an intersection (Route 111 and North Lowell Road) responding to a call.

"Caron said that damage to both the van and cruiser was moderate to significant." Ah, I saw the aftermath of the accident; it would be hard to believe the cruiser will not be totaled.....the statement by Caron is a bit of an understatement.

No I slowed to do just that but was rather aggressively waved to move on.........It looked like the front axle of the cruiser was in two pieces with the entire front end pretty mangled; front tires going the opposite direction and all. It almost looked like it collided with the street light pole in addition to the mini van. It is good that no one was hurt. What I am curious about is exactly how did it happen? I mean I hear the explanation above but the only thing I can surmise is the cruiser was coming up the hill traveling 111 east and the minivan pulled out presumably taking a left going 111w; given where the vehicles ended up it is the only thing that makes sense. Maybe it is time to have warning lights on our intersections that alert and change light patterns on an approaching emergency vehicle; other areas have such systems I am not sure that we do.

I agree Charlie. Of course it was totaled.
