Will Chevron Refinery Fire Affect Bay Area Gas Prices?

If production at Chevron is negatively affected by the recent fire, gas prices could spike.

A fire at a crude unit at the Chevron Refinery in Richmond on Monday could drive up Bay Area gas prices.

Bay Area drivers saw first-hand the affect of a breakdown in the supply chain in July. A at the Valero Benicia refinery on July 26 affected production at the 170,000-barrel-a-day refinery and gas prices went up.

Gasoline is like all commodities: When the supply is cut and there is no corresponding decrease in demand, the price increases. The size of the increase will depend on how much and for how long the supply is affected.
