VIDEO: The Scene After Caltrain Fatally Strikes Man on San Mateo Tracks

The man was hit about 1 a.m. just north of the 25th Avenue crossing.

Update 11:12 a.m.: The man killed on the tracks has been identified as 23-year-old Eric Roof of San Mateo.

A Caltrain fatally struck a man on the tracks north of the Hillsdale Station in San Mateo early this morning.

The train, No. 198, departed San Francisco at 12:01 a.m. and was headed south with 62 passengers onboard when it struck the man at about 1 a.m., Caltrain spokeswoman Christine Dunn said.

The train left the scene just after 2 a.m. to continue making its southbound stops.

There are not expected to be any delays to the morning commute. The first train is scheduled to depart at 4:30 a.m. from the San Jose Diridon Station.

This is the fifth Caltrain fatality this year. In 2010, there were 11 fatalities on the Caltrain right of way.
