Update: Bicyclist Seriously Injured in Ralston Ave. Collision

A pair of separate, but related traffic collisions snarled morning commute traffic on Ralston Avenue Tuesday.

Update: 6:00 p.m. Tuesday

Two women were injured Tuesday morning in two traffic related incidents along Ralston Avenue.

According to Belmont police, the first, a collision between a car and a bicyclist, occurred at approximately 8:25 a.m. on Ralston Avenue near Carlmont Shopping Center.

The bicyclist, a 62-year-old Belmont woman, was riding eastbound on Ralston Avenue when she collided with a Toyota sedan that was turning into the Carlmont Shopping Center, from westbound Ralston Avenue.

The bicyclist sustained serious, non life-threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital. The driver of the Toyota, a 42-year-old Belmont woman, was not injured.

As Belmont Fire Department paramedics were treating the bicyclist, the ambulance that was en route to the scene was involved in a collision on Ralston Avenue at Avon Street.

The ambulance was westbound Ralston, with its lights on and siren sounding, when a Nissan sedan, driven by a 64-year-old Belmont woman, pulled out onto Ralston Avenue from Avon Street, colliding with the ambulance.

As a result of the second collision, another ambulance had to be dispatched to the original incident involving the bicyclist.

Belmont fire department personnel and a third ambulance were sent to check on the driver of the Nissan, who was examined at the scene and released.  The medics in the ambulance involved in the collision were not injured.

The initial collision, involving the bicyclist, is under investigation by the Belmont Police Department.

There is no bicycle lane in the area of Ralston Avenue where the collision occurred.  The collision involving the ambulance is being investigated by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), at the request of the Belmont PD.

The CHP was called in as all the on-duty BPD units were committed to the first collision investigation.

In total, Ralston Avenue between Notre Dame Avenue and Alameda de las Pulgas was closed for approximately 90 minutes and was re-opened to all traffic at approx. 10:00am.

Update: 10:00 a.m. Tuesday

Belmont police have reopened Ralston Avenue to traffic in both directions east of Alameda de las Pulgas at about 10:00 a.m. Tuesday morning following two accidents, one involving a bicyclist and a car and the other involving a car and an ambulance on its way to transport the injured bicyclist.

Traffic was halted in both directions from Alameda de las Pulgas to Notre Dame Avenue from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m.

Patch will update this story as information becomes available.

Tuesday 9:30 a.m.

Ralston Avenue was shut down this morning after a car hit a female bicyclist near Carlmont Shopping around 8:30 a.m. Both westbound and eastbound Ralston from Notre Dame Avenue to Alameda de Las Pulgas are now open.

The female’s condition is unknown, but the accident did not appear to be life threatening, according to Belmont Police Lt. Pat Halleran. Police do not know if the woman was riding in the bike lane or not.

While the police and injured woman were waiting for an ambulance to arrive, a woman in a blue car turning east onto Ralston Avenue from Avon pulled in front of the ambulance. The ambulance hit the woman’s car and she suffered a laceration.

CHP was called in to scene to help out with the second accident while Belmont Police were investigating the first.

Police cars and emergency vehicles are still on the scene.

What kind of idiot gets in the way of an Ambulance? Let me guess.

A 64 year old was driving a hybrid Nissan that hit an ambulance on the way to a scene where a Toyota Prius hit a 62 year old bicyclist. This sounds like a joke about hippies.

I'm not surprised this happened. Cars often cut off bicyclist and pedestrians when turning. Cars drive in the marked bicycle lanes along Ralston. They don’t stop at stop signs, nor allow pedestrians to cross on marked crosswalks.
I've nearly been hit by cars making left turns from Ralston onto Chula Vista even though there is a clearly marked crosswalk. This has happened numerous times. Parts of the sidewalk along Ralston are so narrow, two people can’t pass abreast. Once I stepped off the sidewalk into the bicycle lane to let a couple pass on the sidewalk. An Avanti pizza delivery car was driving in the bicycle lane, nearly hit me and even honked their horn at me.

I don't get the joke?

A friend of mine who was hit up on Hallmark two years ago and went through two years of rehabilitating on his knee says that the lesson he learned is to sue early. The longer you wait the more the culprits insurance will discount your injury. An early lawsuit allows you to build the case by submitting monthly bills and statements.

A smaller car causes less damage in collision with another car; and a hybrid or electric puts out less air pollutants. However recycled road dust which is 40% of PM10, tire dust, brake liners and collisions with bikes and peds are still major problems for asthma, lund cancer etc.and sedentary issues related to heart diseaase and diabeties are the same. The largest problem is the ability to access distant land uses which is worsened by the better gas mileage. Driving and the Belmont's restriction of safe choices are the problems.

I get the joke. All three should not be on the road.

Ralston has become a huge cluster puck. Combine that with high school kids driving, bicycles and those walking from caltrain. 8:25 sounds like around the time frantic parents are done dropping off kids at school and racing off to work. What a mess Belmont has become during commute hours.

This is very tragic. I hope that the cyclist is able to make a full recovery.
What is happening with the Ralston corridor study? Why is there no bicycle lane (or sharrows) in the area where the cyclist was seriously injured? How many people need to get seriously injured before the City does something?

I ride up and down Ralston quite frequently and am always on high alert around the Carlmont Shopping Center entrance. It's a very dangerous part of the road - I hope the city will consider a clearly marked bike lane and possibly removing some of the street parking. The whole of Ralston is difficult on a bike - up above Cipriani, I often get buzzed by motorists trying to race others off from the Cipriani light pressing me into the poor pavement at the curb. Ralston is a major corridor for both car and bicycle traffic with no good alternative nearby; the city should study options that will make it safer for both.

Hi Carmen....thank you for your post. Can you be more specific about the location of the dangerousRead More driveway? Can you add a photo?
Michele Moyer June 16, 2013 at 09:17 am
Thanks Joan - there is one in the sub-head of the blog I posted on School-Force Voices today; wouldRead More love if it could be corrected. Been scratching my head til I saw this post :)

Sorry about that! There's nothing I can do on my end----it's system-wide bug, which I believe isRead More fixed now. :)

I also preferred the 'old' Patch - this format makes it difficult to find articles that are aren'tRead More that old. One example was the informative article on who was running for city Council. I was having problems finding it and finally had to query on a candidate's name to find. I don't recall having that issue with the original format. Also our neighborhood had a water break line and we were without water for some hours a few Sundays ago. I tried to find out the reason for the break (because of construction or old pipes?) and could not find anything on the Patch regarding this. Not sure if they just didn't report or I just couldn't find.

Not crazy about the new Patch either. Also, I want to post-for sale, and this section is crowdedRead More with announcements, etc.

Another thing that needs to be fixed: When you go to leave a comment, it takes you over to whereRead More you have to sign in, you sign in expecting to be returned to the article on which you are commenting, but it, instead, takes you back to some different article. PLEASE FIX THIS!!!! Also, please reinstate the feature where we can sign up to be notified if/when more comments are made concerning the article(s) we've commented on so we can follow the conversation. Thank you.

what do the local Belmont restaurants think of this? do these people pay a license to the city?
Joan S. Dentler (Editor) June 4, 2013 at 07:15 am
Hi Don....thanks for your question. Yes, Off the Grid does pay a licensing fee to the city, and soRead More far, we haven't heard any concerns by local restaurants. The food trucks provide an option to a traditional restaurant---pick up and go----and they are only around 4-5 hours per week (on Mondays, typically not a big restaurant night anyway). Have you tried the food yet?
