Truck Crashes, Explodes on San Mateo Bridge

CHP says the driver was unhurt after slamming the vehicle into a wall, igniting cargo of oxygen tanks.

A truck carrying oxygen tanks struck a wall on the eastbound San Mateo-Hayward Bridge and exploded this morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The 26-foot flatbed truck, which was carrying a load of plastic chairs and oxygen tanks, struck a wall mid-span and burst into flames at about 10:15 a.m., CHP Sgt. John Carman said.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash and the driver appears to have escaped injury, Carman said.

The fire was put out by 10:39 a.m., but the cabin of the truck was destroyed, Carman said.

Two eastbound lanes of state Highway 92 on the bridge are closed because of the fire, and a tow truck has been called. Westbound traffic is also moving slowly, Carman said.
