San Carlos Man Arrested in Assault Near Belmont Bar

The victim, a 48-year-old Belmont man, remains hospitalized.

Belmont police have arrested a man suspected of assaulting another man early Monday morning after an apparent bar fight at the Lariat Tavern on El Camino Real.

According to a statement released today by the Belmont Police Department, late Monday afternoon, Joseph Kaufman of San Carlos was taken into custody by Belmont police detectives without incident.

Kaufman, 23, had been identified as a person of interest early in the investigation when detectives learned that he and the victim, a 48-year-old Belmont man, were last seen together arguing outside the Lariat Tavern after closing. Police say the assault occurred in the 800 block of Broadway in Belmont.

On Monday at approximately 2:45 a.m., Belmont police received a 9-1-1 call reporting that a man was down in the street on Broadway between Civic Lane and Fifth Avenue. Upon arrival, police found the victim lying in the street unconscious. The victim was treated at the scene by Belmont Fire Department paramedics and was transported to a local hospital with undetermined injuries.

The  victim remains in an area hospital.  No details regarding the victim's condition are available and the his name is not being released.
