Red Ribbon Week Poster Winners Emphasize 'A Healthy Me'

Red Ribbon Week

Reaffirming this year's Red Ribbon Week theme, "A Healthy Me Is Drug Free!” four Belmont students put Sharpie to paper to create the winning selections in this year's poster contest.

The foursome was honored Tuesday night at the Belmont City Council meeting.

"As we celebrate Red Ribbon Week, I am pleased to announce the four winners of this year's poster contest," said Belmont Police Chief Dan DeSmidt.

There were 60 entries in the contest by K-8 students in Belmont and Redwood Shores. The posters symbolize the importance of living an alcohol, drug and violence free healthy lifestyle.

School Resource Officer Milana Jordan introduced each student who came forward for a handshake and a photograph with Jordan, the chief, and city councilmembers.

Winners of the 2013 Red Ribbon Week Poster Contest are:
Shannon Aarons, 4th grade, Redwood Shores Elementary School
Angelo DeMartini, 3rd grade, IHM Elementary School
Alec Desuasido, 6th grade, IHM Elementary School
Colin O'Connor, 4th grade, IHM Elementary School

"My poster was a collage with poems in bubbles showing healthy things like vegetables with happy faces, and cigarettes and alcohol with an "X" over it," said Alec.

"The message in my poster was "Be happy and stay healthy!" Alec added.

Red Ribbon week is October 23-31. During that week Belmont police officers will be conducting drug and violence prevention activities at the schools.
