Belmont Police Seek Two Suspects in Auto Burglaries

One suspect is already in custody in connection with a number of early morning auto burglaries.

Police have arrested a 25-year-old San Jose woman and are looking for two more suspects in connection with a series of auto burglaries overnight in Belmont.

The incident began at about 3:40 a.m. when a Belmont officer tried to pull over a Honda Civic in the 1000 block of Ralston Avenue, Belmont police Lt. Pat Halleran said.

The Honda didn't immediately stop and a short pursuit ensued until the car reached the intersection of Sixth Avenue and Hill Street, Halleran said.

Two of the suspects in the car, a male and female, ran away once the car was stopped but the third suspect -- 25-year-old Maria Garcia of San Jose -- was arrested without incident, according to Halleran.

She was booked into San Mateo County Jail for parole violation.

San Mateo police and sheriff's deputies helped Belmont police search for the two other suspects but were unable to find them.

The Honda the suspects had been driving was found to be stolen out of San Jose, and as the morning continued the Belmont Police Department received three reports of Hondas being stolen throughout town.

The stolen cars were:

  • A 1995 Black Honda Civic was reported stolen from the 2000 block of Mezes Avenue and was located abandoned in the 2100 block of Coronet Boulevard.
  • A Green 1999 Honda Civic was reported stolen from the 900 block of Miramar Terrace and was recovered on Middle Road, after being involved in a non-injury hit and run collision at Ralston Avenue and El Camino Real.
  • A blue 1990 Honda Accord 4-door Sedan was reported stolen from the 1600 block of Valley View Avenue and is still outstanding.

Police believe the stolen Hondas may be linked to the suspects from the Honda Civic that was pulled over, Halleran said. In fact, property recovered from that car is believed to have been stolen from one or more parked vehicles during the night, in Belmont.

The blue 1990 Honda that remains missing has a California license plate No. 2YHU742.

Residents are urged to lock their vehicles and to report any suspicious activity to the Police Department at 650-595-7400.
