Police Remind Drivers to Buckle Up

With the holiday season approaching, Belmont police are warning drivers to wear seat belts.

The 's "Click It or Ticket" campaign kicks off today in an effort to keep the roads safe during the holiday season.

During the campaign, which lasts through Nov. 28, officers will crack down on drivers and passengers not wearing seat belts.

Traffic deaths have declined statewide by 23 percent, from 3,995 in 2007 to 3,081 in 2009, partially due to increased seat belt use. Authorities say 83 percent of Americans buckle up each day, a nationwide high.

Still, authorities warn more than 35 vehicle occupants not wearing seat belts will be killed each day nationwide during the holidays.

"Sadly, the holidays, which for many are the happiest time of the year, is also one of the deadliest and most tragic," Belmont Police Chief Don Mattei said in a statement.
