Slideshow: Belmont NNO--Block Parties With a Safety Message

Nine National Night Out parties were held Tuesday evening throughout Belmont. Did your neighborhood participate?

What started out a few years ago as a low-key gathering of a smattering of Belmont neighbors and a police cruiser or two, has evolved into one of Belmont's most lively community-wide events.

National Night Out succeeded Tuesday night in bringing together police and fire officials, CERT volunteers, councilmembers, city staff, residents and business owners to promote the message of community safety at it's most basic level---looking out for one another.

And with each passing year, parties are bumping up the festivities---in Belmont Heights, pony rides were offered to kids along Lake Road, while at Carlmont Shopping Center jump houses and the Belmont Police Department's mobile command unit were the main attractions.

Several Belmont city councilmembers made the rounds at the various parties, including David Braunstein who spoke to Belmont Heights residents about the importance of spreading the message of National Night Out.

"Talk to your neighbors, talk to the people in other neighborhoods, and let them know how important an event like this is," said Braunstein.
