Mountain Lion Spotted in Portola Valley

The carnivorous cat was seen at about 8 a.m. Wednesday.

A mountain lion sighting was reported at about 8 a.m. on Wednesday in Portola Valley, according to San Mateo County emergency officials.

The creature was seen in the vicinity of Pony Tracks Ranch, located at 499 Old Spanish Trail.

Residents are advised not to approach mountain lions, and to avoid hiking or jogging at dawn, dusk and night, when the animals are most active.

In the case of a mountain lion encounter, emergency officials advise residents to try to appear large and make noise.

Mountain lions reside in more than half of California, and generally live wherever deer exist, including here in Belmont.
