Mountain Lion Seen Roaming in Portola Valley

The animal was spotted at about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday.

A mountain lion was spotted in San Mateo County's Portola Valley area Wednesday evening, emergency officials said.

At about 7:15 p.m., the big cat was seen roaming in the 500 block of Westridge Drive, in a rural residential neighborhood.

Residents are advised not to approach mountain lions, and should avoid hiking or jogging at dawn, dusk, and night, when the animals are most active.

If a mountain lion is encountered, emergency officials advise residents to try to appear large and make noise.
