A group of Marines that served with , the 27-year-old San Bruno man who went missing March 5, have banded together to conduct another search for him Saturday.
At least 20 Marines—some from as far away as Camp Pendelton, New Hampshire, Oklahoma and Texas—are expected to arrive in the area today in preparation for the search for McHenry, a former Marine. The search will start at 8 a.m. Saturday and last through Monday, according toa post on CNN's iReport.
"It started with a handful of Marines and now many of their brothers in Arms that were not even stationed with Joe are so moved at the show of and dedication to brotherhood that they are joining the search," the iReport post said. "They take seriously the 'Leave no Marine Behind.'"
A San Mateo County search and rescue team made another effort on March 12 to find McHenry on beaches and cliffs in a 32-acre park in Pacifica, but they didn't find any new leads. McHenry had told family members that he was going on an overnight rock climbing and camping trip at a beach near Pacifica, but he never returned.
His car was found parked in a residential area near Sharp Park Golf Course, and a backpack believed to have been McHenry's was located on the beach near Mori Point. But no other signs of the missing man were found, according to San Bruno police.
When a group of Marines who were stationed with McHenry learned that he still had not been found, they decided to take a leave of absence to form their own grassroots effort to search for the missing Marine.
The person who submitted the post to iReport further explained the effort:
I live near Pacifica and am Active duty Coast Guard. My brother Richard Godfrey was stationed with Joe in Iraq they were both communication specialist. Joe was his mentor. My brother says "Retrieving wounded comrades from the field of fire is a Marine Corps tradition more sacred than life". The Marine's goal is to search the last known area to find McHenry regardless of his condition and if he is found in less than favorable circumstances at least he will get a proper funeral and there will be some closure for the people blessed to have him in their lives.
