According to , the first engine found smoke and flames coming from the garage of the home. Additional fire units were requested and apparatus from both San Mateo County and San Mateo City Fire Departments responded.  The single occupant of the home, a 66-year-old man, was able to get out of the house before emergency personnel arrived.

The fire was contained to the garage, however leaking fuel from one of the two vehicles in the garage presented a problem for fire fighters, who used foam to extinguish the fire.
