'Kilo' Is Belmont's New Top Dog

Officer Dan Friedman and his K9 partner Kilo will be on streets of Belmont by the last week of November.

The Belmont Police Department welcomed its newest K9 officer last week, Kilo.
Kilo and his human police partner, Officer Dan Friedman, began a four-week basic training on Oct. 28 and expect to be out on the streets of Belmont by the end of November.

According to the Belmont Police Dept., Kilo will initially be trained as a patrol dog, which includes suspect location, apprehension and tracking. After they have some time patrolling the streets, Officer Friedman and Kilo will return to training for narcotic detection.

Kilo takes over for retired K9 officer Nitro, who hung up his leash in January after eight years as the partner of Officer Mike Chicas.

"He worked 14 hours a day and lasted much longer in his job than most K-9 officers," explained Chicas at Nitro's retirement ceremony in January.

Nitro, a German-bred German shepherd, now lives with the Chicas family.
