Dog Boarding Job Leads to Crime Spree Investigation, Arrests

Suspect Ashley Kirk was an employee at Petsmart in San Carlos, which is where deputies say the crime spree began.

A husband and wife were arrested by San Mateo County sheriff's deputies in Discovery Bay, CA on Monday after a five-month investigation that began last last fall when one of the suspects was working at Petsmart in San Carlos. 

According to Dep. Rebecca Rosenblatt of the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office, suspects, Ashley Kirk and Juan Ortega-Ramos, both 24, of San Jose, were originally arrested for possession of stolen property in September of 2013 as a result of knowledge gleaned through her job boarding dogs at the Petsmart store in San Carlos. 

Since that time, San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office detectives have continued to investigate the pair to see how extensive their crime spree extended.

After five months of investigation numerous search warrants, two arrests warrants were issued in the amount of $500,000 each for the husband-wife team. 

The pair were subsequently arrested Monday afternoon on counts residential burglary, possession of stolen property, conspiracy, and a stolen car.

They were booked into San Mateo County Jail, where they remain on 500,000 bail respectively.
