Fugitive Arrested After Foot Chase in Belmont

17-year-old suspect was wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant.

A 17-year-old boy wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant is in custody at San Mateo County Juvenile Hall this afternoon after leading police on a chase through the streets of downtown Belmont.

While fleeing officers, the juvenile ran into traffic on Ralston Avenue and was struck by a car, but kept on running.

At approximately 9:45 a.m., Belmont police responded to a frantic 9-1-1 call at a business in the 800 block of El Camino Real. Upon arrival, officers found that several merchandise displays had been knocked over during an argument between the business owner and his 17-year-old son.

As the suspect darted into the street, he was struck by a 2000 Jaguar driven by a 75-year-old Belmont woman.  In spite of being struck by a car, the suspect got up and continued to run through traffic and into the business district on the south side of Ralston Ave.

The driver of the car was not injured in the collision.

The chase ended a short time later, when the suspect was located attempting to hide behind a Dumpster in a parking lot between Ralston and Emmett avenues.  Officers attempted to take the suspect into custody once again, but the suspect resisted and officers used a Taser to gain control of the suspect.  He was subsequently arrested without further incident.

The suspect was treated at the scene by Belmont Fire Department paramedics and transported to an area hospital for injuries he sustained when he was struck by the car.

After being cleared by medical staff, the suspect was booked into the San Mateo County Juvenile Hall on the outstanding warrant and a charge of resisting arrest.
