Former Ralston School Custodian Arrested for Allegedly Molesting Student

Andre Edwards was arrested at his Hayward home today.

UPDATE 6:25 P.M.: Andre Edwards is due to appear in San Mateo County Superior Court for his initial felony arraignment at 1:30 p.m. on Friday. Belmont Patch will update this story following the arraignment.

UPDATE 4:56 P.M.: A former custodian was arrested at his Hayward home today for allegedly molesting a female student last year, according to a statement released by the .

Andre Edwards, 52, was taken into custody this afternoon on suspicion of two felony counts of annoying/molesting a child, and will be booked into jail, police said.

Police began investigating Edwards after claims surfaced that he allegedly groped a female student on campus in November 2010, police said.

"That investigation eventually uncovered additional information on a previously unsubstantiated allegation from 2001, which resulted in the second count," police said in a statement.

Edwards was hired by the Belmont-Redwood Shores School District in September 1987, and retired on Feb. 28 during the four-month-long investigation. The San Mateo County District Attorney's Office issued his $200,000 arrest warrant on Wednesday.

Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to contact Belmont police investigators at (650) 595-7400 or the Crime Tip Line at (650) 598-3000.

if father m is a catholic priest, is it not absolute hypocrisy for him to comment on a child molestation case? Shame on you.
RP March 26, 2011 at 01:03 AM
Tommy Tee Good for you, you don't have to believe that I am the actual girl...... These comments are not who's real and who's not..... It's actual feelings towards what's going on with this monster....,

Tommy Boy: When all the facts come out, I promise you that you will have egg on your face!!! You apparently have no faith at all in humanity. Shame on you!!!

How do we know if your are not AE's family member??? or AE himself?
Annie March 26, 2011 at 04:44 AM
This is ridiculous, 2 girls have come forward. I won't be surprised if more girls come forward once they find out that Andre has been arrested. This name calling in so uncalled for, let the courts decide.

@ Joe on Friday March 25th Thanks for the vitriol and short sighted-ness by your quick post. I am of retired Luthern clergy. We marry-have wives of extroirdany greatness and have and raise familes. I use to live in Burlingame but now live in Half Moon Bay. Many Catholic priests have done much damage but your statement proposes that all of the Catholic priests of all time are that way. I doubt that a Catholic priest, for this/that reason would post on here unless he called himself - Fred or Pete or Joe. There is some shame in your statement also.
KF March 26, 2011 at 09:01 PM
omg this is so stupid, andre helped saved my friends life when i was in 7th grade .. he would never molest anyone and is a very nice man.. whoever started this rumor has no idea of the impliactions they are about to cause him, hopefully the law gets this one right
Phillip Bailey March 26, 2011 at 10:32 PM
Dear KF It's okay that you feel this way. Emotions can be difficult for young people to put into the adult perspective and likewise us. Andre was a hero the day the vehicle went out of control and was hurtling towards all those students. His efforts were truly heroic as you mentioned with him saving your friend. But no matter how many OMG's in the world, I assure you that his heroism and the charges he faces have nothing to do with each other. The implications can be horrible. The "Whoever" you mention in your statement is the Belmont Police department. They could never make a public statement to the media without a factual basis. It is only alledged that Andre is guilty. The law of the land is innocent until proven guilty, however he has a long and steep hill to climb.

V said at 6:20pm on Friday, March 25, 2011 We have to be very careful what we say about the f_ _ _ _r! V...its okay. It goes with the territory but thank you for your support. There was really no problem until Joe tried to shine the spotlight onto my user name, but that's okay also as he showed that even his logic is flawed.

More Bad behavior.... And I went back and read about all the Moms/Dads/Girls and Boys that said the situation at Ralston could not have happend because __________ _________ was such a "nice guy" who helped and took care of all the kids..... WoW.... http://www.fugitive.com/archives/38502
Kat April 18, 2011 at 05:37 PM
Don't call him a monster if you never knew him EP.... He was likely second dad and the only person that would take care of me during my three years there at Ralston and this is justgetting ridiculous! Ihave played on his team for three yearsand not once did he do nything along those terms. I think it is really funny how you all once called him he hero of Belmont for saving the kids, one of them being my cousin and his friends... Now from these accusations he is now considered a monster? Mind your own business and do not bring those terms into this commentaryEP because you do not even know him. Andre I am always going o e on your side and you will have your innocence.
RP April 18, 2011 at 06:47 PM
U mean RP? Kat I do know ANdre for ur information! I went to school with him when he was a jainitor my older sister went to school at ralston also and even back then her girlfriends said he was saying innapropriate things to them... And it is my buisness because Iam the first girl in this case that he's being charged with.. So because he didn't try nothing with you means he's innocent? No I'm glad he didn't do anything to you! I'm 23 and I have a daughter and to me he is a MONSTER! I'll be glad when he goes to jail so my daughter won't have to ever be around him...SO that being said you mind your buisness. If he gets away again like what happen to my case god will punish him because he knows what he did ! U don't.. He will always be a MONSTER to me and my family. After that happen to me and he didn't get caught he was able to prove himself as a better person who wouldn't? And now look he couldn't keep his hands to himself .. Things always catch up with a person who does wrong it just takes time..
V April 20, 2011 at 05:23 PM
Mind your own f_ _ _ _ _ business Kat! Until a situation happens to you. Why don't you attned every court hearing???
Phillip Bailey April 20, 2011 at 06:22 PM
RP and Kat: What V is trying to convey is that you replied to V on her/his March 22nd post whereas most of us have taken this apart from day one. Kat your protection of Andre is normal yet very ignorant. Men and Women who prey on younger boys or girls do not walk around with a sign on their forehead advertising their demons or the temptations in their life. They pick and choose they prey with caution and very RARELY make a mistake. When they do do something improper - usually those young people offended go to the proper authorities and then the SHOCK and HORROR on both sides of the fence appear. Maybe he was a good custodian and a GREAT coach but that matters nothing when the truth comes out on his other weaknesses. How can you be bent at the victims if they are telling the truth. One thing Ralston apparently did not influence you on his your ability to put together complete sentences and correct choice of words but I guess the electronic world order punishes all of us in various ways. RP (right above) No I don't think Kat was referring to EP. It was a reference to EP's post on: 1:25pm on Tuesday, March 22, 2011. In closing dearest KAT - I think you need to do more research on Mr Edwards before you defend everything about him!

I think this situation is very unfortunate. On the other hand I am really not surprised by this.First,I would like to say that I coached at Ralston for 4 years. My neice was molested before I started coaching and Belmont police advised me that if I said things to Andre that I would get in trouble since he was found not guilty/not enough evidence. So 2 yrs later I started coaching at Ralston and got along with Andre.Once I never said anything about the incident even after my son graduated in 2005.You could be the nicest person in the world and everyone love you for many years and have your own little secret.Especially at this young age a lot of girls will not come forward. And for some of you parents don't be so naive! It could of happened to more girls? Also as a coach/parent there there should be no one on one conversations in private with athletes/students.To this day I have no grudges and the justice system will take care of itself!
Phillip Bailey April 26, 2011 at 07:02 PM
Well, NOW I am disturbed at the comments that BELMONT Police said to YOU regarding YOU being in trouble had YOU said anything to Andre, that is shocking that the BPD went that FAR in cautioning you. Me personally, had it been MY neice, I would have had to say something to him in private, but granted that is easy for me to say when you were the one living it... Everyone got along with Andre so to speak...the SECRETS of men like him often time ruin it for the GOOD single/married men of the world and definately RUIN it for other coaches be it volunteer/on campus or off campus. I agree with you chiding some of the parents but they had no way of knowing either since some of the parents now of kids - went there also so their opinions of Andre were baised in his favor. Most of his support came from OTHER kids now grown and graduated. Again they prob. dont understand how men and women like this weave their web as they ONLY go after certain types of kids and they usually get away with their crime for years and then.......get caught 20 yrs down the road.

Laura Dudnick: Could you update this story...as much as you can?
Laura Dudnick (Editor) May 11, 2011 at 03:59 AM
Hi Phillip, Andre Edwards' next court date is on May 26, when a date will be set for his preliminary hearing. Here's the link to the article where that's mentioned, and where it's reported that he pleaded not guilty: http://belmont-ca.patch.com/articles/former-ralston-school-custodian-pleads-not-guilty-to-molestation-charges Belmont Patch will absolutely update the story after his next court date. Please let me know if you have any more questions.
Thomas May 21, 2011 at 07:50 AM
I have known and coached against Andre since 1995. He was always a cool dude, but his actions always questionable. He would often drive female student athletes in his car to games. As a male coach, that's just something that you should not do. I hope that he is innocent, but if the alligations are true and he did harm these girls, he needs to serve his punishment. After that punishment hopefully he can get some help to straighten his life out. I feel for his family during this time, as they are the ones that will suffer the most.
kuuipo May 21, 2011 at 05:44 PM
Great commentary Thomas. Having also known Andre since the 90's and having met him due to questionable behavior relayed to me by my child, who was a Ralston student at the time, I find these charges completely plausible and deeply saddening not only for his family but for the victimized students and their families. If the allegations are true he has placed a lifelong scar, probably incredibly deep, that can never be erased and no punishment inflicted upon him can right the wrongs caused. If the allegations are untrue then this is simply an incredibly sad situation. My intuition tells me the allegations are true and a subset of wrongs committed, but being a logical and rational person, I'm hoping true justice will prevail and am open to the notion he is guilty only of questionable behaviors and judgment and not of anything criminal.
Bob May 21, 2011 at 06:15 PM
Hi Vivian, your comment stuck out to me. "Regarding the superintendent, the current superintendent Emerita Orta-Camalleri ....the current superintendent and if she and the board knew this employee was still in daily contact with students, then the buck does stop with them." Under their watch? You can hope for more or you can vote for more in November. We are currently looking at a possible boundary change that had originally been set to be decided upon at the May 19th School Board Meeting. The traffic study which was needed to be produced before that date has yet to even be scheduled with the City. Seems their watch is mostly in the rear view mirror instead of being proactive.
Phillip Bailey May 25, 2011 at 06:49 PM
@ Bob above: I am attempting to determine what your comments have to do about the Andre incident? What if those that are subbordinates under the "Super"....did not bring it to the attention of the top people in the district? Help me understand, thanks Bob.
Bob May 25, 2011 at 07:02 PM
They have little to do with the Andre incident. They have more to do with how the current Super and board conduct business.
Phillip Bailey August 20, 2011 at 09:28 PM
laura....or whomever took her spot....Has there been any resolution or updates on Andre's situtation or the charges leveled towards him?
