Fire Breaks Out at Capitola Duplex, Homes Evacuated

The blaze in the 600 block of 41st Avenue was reported just before 5 p.m., according to published reports.

A fire broke out Saturday at a Duplex in Capitola but no injuries were reported.

The fire in the 600 block of 41st Avenue was reported just before 5 p.m., according to the Santa Cruz Sentinel's website.

Several nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution and heavy smoke and flames could be seen coming from the building, the Sentinel reported.

A truck parked in the garage -- the point of origin for the blaze -- was destroyed, authorities said.

Officials closed a number of streets, including 41st Avenue at Portola Drive, Opal Cliffs Drive and East Cliff Drive, the newspaper reported.

According to the Sentinel, a resident opened the garage door when he smelled something electrical and smoke poured out of the space.
