Fatal Collision Knocks Out Power on SM Bridge

The collision occurred at 12:32 a.m. Tuesday, closing down two eastbound lanes.

 

The California Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal collision on the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge that knocked out power on a section of the eastern portion this morning, according to the CHP.

The collision on eastbound state Highway 92 was reported at 12:32 a.m. A white SUV hit the center divider on the bridge, and then hit a structure containing high voltage power lines. Power was shut down between the structure and the eastern toll plaza, CHP officials said.

A sig-alert was issued at 1:04 a.m. advising motorists that two lanes of the eastbound portion of the bridge would be shut down due to the accident. At least one person has died due to the collision, and the Alameda County coroner's bureau responded to the scene. CHP officers remain on the scene investigating and further information about the victim or possible victims remains unknown.
